Quickstart

The search endpoint lets you intelligently search the web and extract contents from the results. 

By default, it automatically chooses between traditional keyword search and Exa's embeddings-based model, to find the most relevant results for your query.

Get an LLM answer to a question informed by Exa search results. Fully compatible with OpenAI's chat completions endpoint - docs [here](https://docs.exa.ai/reference/chat-completions).
`/answer` performs an Exa search and uses an LLM to generate either:
1. A direct answer for specific queries. (i.e. "What is the capital of France?" would return "Paris")
2. A detailed summary with citations for open-ended queries (i.e. "What is the state of ai in healthcare?" would return a summary with citations to relevant sources)

The response includes both the generated answer and the sources used to create it. The endpoint also supports streaming (as `stream=True`), which will returns tokens as they are generated.


Answer

Create a long-running, multi-step research task that explores the web, gathers sources, synthesizes findings, and returns structured JSON results with citations. Use this endpoint to submit natural-language instructions and a desired output schema; the system will asynchronously perform research and deliver results matching your specification.

Submit your request to the POST `/research/tasks` endpoint. The response will include a unique task `id` that you can use to poll for status and retrieve results via the GET `/research/tasks/{id}` endpoint.

**Output Schema Requirements:**  
The output schema you provide must meet the following criteria:
- It must be a valid [JSON Schema](https://json-schema.org/specification).
- The root type must be an `object`.
- All root-level fields must be listed in the `required` array (i.e., all top-level properties are required).
- The schema must include `"additionalProperties": false` at the root level.


Research Tasks

Retrieve the status and results of a previously created research task.

This endpoint allows you to poll for the completion and output of a research task initiated via the POST `/research/tasks` endpoint. Each research task runs asynchronously, performing multi-step research, synthesis, and structured output generation as specified in your original request.

Use the unique task `id` returned from the creation endpoint to check whether the task is still running, has completed successfully, or has failed. When the task is complete, the response will include the structured JSON output (matching your provided schema) and any relevant citations.

Typical use case:  
1. Create a research task with POST `/research/tasks` and receive a task `id`.
2. Poll this endpoint with the task `id` until the task is complete.
3. Retrieve the final results and citations once available.
